Peri-Implantitis Treatment

Peri-implantitis is a condition that can occur when infection or irritations develop around dental implants. It is much like gingivitis or periodontal disease in patients with natural teeth. The condition results from the build-up of bacterial plaque or a foreign body, which can eventually affect the bone around the implant.

Recurrence of any issues that led to the initial loss of the patient’s natural teeth is a major concern, which is why dental implant patients are generally advised to schedule routine check-ups to catch warning signs early on.

Is Peri-Implantitis Treatment Right for Me?

Following any dental implant procedures, you will receive certain instructions for maintenance of the implants. If these instructions are not carefully followed, you will be at increased risk of peri-implantitis.

The condition can also occur from other complications and factors. East Bay Periodontics and Implant Dentistry is the best dentist for maintaining dental implants and we always put together comprehensive care and monitoring plans for our patients.

During the Procedure

The Perioscope can give a more thorough inspection of the area and can identify issues like cement deposits that are common causes of peri-mucositis which only affects the gum tissue not the bone.

If bone loss is already present, surgical treatment may be necessary to amend bone grafts and maintain support for the dental implant. LAPIP laser therapy can target diseased tissue around the dental implant and promote bone regeneration. Each case of peri-implantitis is unique and will require a patient-specific approach.

Recovery

There are a wide range of treatments for peri-implantitis. Each will have varying recovery times and aftercare requirements. Non-invasive treatment will have few to no side effects. Bone grafts and other surgical interventions can lead to swelling for several days. Both laser and surgical approaches will likely come with a requirement for a soft foods diet and no brushing immediately following the procedure.
