Sedation Dentistry

While most periodontal and dental implant procedures can be carried out with local anesthesia that numbs the area being worked upon, some patients might prefer a sedative.

Is Sedation Right for Me?

Sedation for periodontal treatments is safe and effective. It allows anxious patients to feel calm and relaxed during their treatments.

There are two different types of dental sedation: intravenous (IV) and oral. IV sedation provides a sedative through an IV drip, while oral sedation is taken as one or more pills before the procedure. Both are highly effective. IV sedation generally offers the periodontal team greater control over the level of sedation during the procedure.

During the Procedure

Sedation is not the same as general anesthesia. You will not be asleep. You will be conscious during the procedure and able to respond to any prompts from the periodontist. With moderate sedation, you will be unlikely to form a clear memory of the procedure. With either minimal or moderate sedation, you will be relaxed and comfortable throughout the procedure.
